BOOMco Whipblast 15m Version Review

Although first released back in 2014, and reviewed extensively elsewhere (including by other folksright here at Blaster Hub), the BOOMco Whipblast is nonetheless worth a second look. After all, it offers functionality you wont find anywhere else, and its exactly what youd expect from any BOOMco blaster:its wacky, unique and most importantly, fun to fire.

The Whipblast comes with four BOOMco darts and a BOOMco target sticker measuring 15cm in diameter.

The Whipblast keeps the BOOMcocolours red, blue, and grey. The Whipblast is equipped with two smart stick shields that can be folded out and rotated, just like otherBOOMco blasters. These shields are more of an aesthetic feature than a shield. They are too small to be practical. It also features a railfor BOOMco attachments. Beneath the main barrel are three dart holders.

It can be difficult to hold the Whipblast. You need to make sure your middle finger does not press the second trigger. Otherwise, the main blaster unit may tilt downwards. My middle finger is usually in an awkward position (see picture below). Not all hands are equal.

To prime the blaster, hold the second trigger down. This will turn the main unit downwards. Continue to hold the second trigger and push the blaster downwards until you hear a click. After it clicks, move the blaster back to its original position. With a little practise, youll be able to prime this blaster with one hand. The technique of single-handed priming is to quickly whip the blaster downwards and then flick it up by the wrist. Although priming is fun, the Whipblast can only be used once. That means you still have to use your other hand to load in another dart. Although I love the idea of whipping the blaster to prime it, BOOMco really overlooks the practicality and ease of using a single-handed priming blaster. If it could fire darts continuously without needing to reload, it would have made a great secondary blaster.

How does the Whipblast perform? It works perfectly. When fired flat, it achieves around 10 to 12 metres. When angled, it is able to reach and surpass the claimed range of 15m (Australian version). Although the 21.3m version is more powerful, it’s still a good option.
